Novel connection. When Richie punches Russell in the face, his mother wants to call the principal, however, Russell wants to keep quiet about the whole incident. Russell’s mom’s response was, “I’m not doing nothing. If one adult did this to another, he be in jail. Why should it be different for kids?” (p. 45)
Blog Question: Should kids solve their own problems or should adults/parents get involved? Explain.
On pg. 45, Russell has a short conversation with his mother, in it he says, "Don't."
"Don't do anything? Why not?" Says his mom.
"Cause it'll just make a mess. I mean, think about it. Everybody's going to know about this... and if my mom comes in yelling or does whatever..."
Russell states that if adults get involved in any situation the kids will be in a bigger mess then they're already in. When bullies are told on, they're just going to beat up the kids even more. Russell is in a very delicate situation. He can't tell any adult, and he can't handle it himself. What should he do? I feel Russell should try to handle this situation himself, in any way he can. And he is handling this situation, and well too. Catalina, Elliot and him are putting out stories, stories that can't be heard on an everyday basis. They're telling the stories of kids who get bullied every single day of their lives, and why they can't stand it anymore. They're also putting up stories of how they get bullied themselves too. Overall, they're seeing a change in after doing this, bullies are bullying them less, and other people around are just hanging out with them more, and slipping in a nice comment now and then. So, if kids take a stand in what they believe in, they're going to see a change.

I think it's really great how you believe in the kids, and how you think the kids can solve their own problems without an adult's parents.
ReplyDeleteI like how you stated all the quotes in proper places, the way you used them to make your argument better. But I think that Russell's mom should get involved because things can get very serous, like what could have happen to Elliot, he got hit in the head, he could have gotten disabled, that would effect his future, so I think his mom should get involved.
ReplyDeleteThis is so good!!! Your detailed writing is the most interesting one I've read. I really like the way you really believe that Russel and his friends are confident enough to solve their own problem!! I like the way you mentioned a part of Russel and his mother's conversation and how you really stood up for them. I think this reflects in your own life, how you are very strong and confident!!! You can explain thing very effective and good. It's very well written.
